Academic Communities (Meta-Majors)

Per SBE Rule 6A-14.065 Meta-Major Academic Pathways: The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) uses meta-majors to help students choose academic programs that align with their career goals. The eight meta-majors are groups of related academic programs that share common courses. At EFSC, these meta-majors are known as “Academic Communities”.

Academic Communities: 

  1. Arts, humanities, communication, and design
  2. Business
  3. Education
  4. Health sciences
  5. Industry/manufacturing and construction
  6. Public safety
  7. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
  8. Social and behavioral sciences and human services

How academic communities help students

  • Helps students choose gateway courses that align with their academic and career goals. 
  • Helps students develop a plan to prepare for math and English gateway courses. 
  • Hels students get academic advising, which can be challenging at two-year institutions. 

Gateway Courses

Each academic community has defined "gateway" courses for English and mathematics as follows:

English – ENC 1101 Composition 1 is the gateway English course for all meta-major academic pathways

Math – The gateway courses for each of the academic pathways is defined as follows:
