Academic Communities (Meta-Majors)
Per SBE Rule 6A-14.065 Meta-Major Academic Pathways: The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) uses meta-majors to help students choose academic programs that align with their career goals. The eight meta-majors are groups of related academic programs that share common courses. At EFSC, these meta-majors are known as “Academic Communities”.
Academic Communities:
- Arts, humanities, communication, and design
- Business
- Education
- Health sciences
- Industry/manufacturing and construction
- Public safety
- Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
- Social and behavioral sciences and human services
How academic communities help students
- Helps students choose gateway courses that align with their academic and career goals.
- Helps students develop a plan to prepare for math and English gateway courses.
- Hels students get academic advising, which can be challenging at two-year institutions.
Gateway Courses
Each academic community has defined "gateway" courses for English and mathematics as follows:
English – ENC 1101 Composition 1 is the gateway English course for all meta-major academic pathways
Math – The gateway courses for each of the academic pathways is defined as follows:
