Adult Cardiac Sonography, Advanced Technical Certificate

The Adult Cardiac Sonography program allows registered Sonography professionals to expand their skills and leads to an Advanced Technical Certificate from Eastern Florida State College. As the adult population ages, the need for doctors to diagnose and treat heart-related issues is increasing, leading to a rising demand for cardiac sonographers.

Classroom and hands-on clinical experience are both key parts of the program, with local hospitals, diagnostic centers and clinics serving as clinical education settings for the certificate. Job opportunities include working in hospitals, emergency clinics, medical clinics and physician’s offices.

Adult Cardiac Sonography is a limited access program with a specialized application process. The program includes courses during two terms each year held on the Melbourne Campus and local clinical settings. To be awarded an ATC, students must have an AS or AAS. The ATC in Adult Cardiac Sonography requires an AS in Sonography from a regionally accredited institution. Coursework from the ATC may be used as part of  BAS-Applied Health Science: Medical Imaging Sciences -Adult Cardiac Sonography Specialization.

The completion of an AS or AAS degree is required for this program.

Diagnostic cardiac sonographers (also known as an echocardiography technologists) use non-invasive ultrasound machines, laptops and transducers to create images of the inside of patients’ hearts, which physicians use to make a medical diagnosis — often without expensive, invasive methods. The Cardiac Sonography Advanced Technical Certificate program is a two-term cohort-style course sequence split into fall and spring terms. The program totals 17 credit hours, 720 clinical/practicum hours and 144 skills laboratory/classroom hours.
